Spring 2018 Enrichment Program

Enrichment classes are offered to provide children with a variety of fun and engaging learning opportunities that they may not have access to during their regular school day.

Each class is held once per week, for 6-12 week sessions. Enrichment classes are operated by outside vendors and Giddens teachers. Class sizes vary, as well as age/grade requirements.

Classes are held from 3:15-4:30. Students who are not picked up by 4:30 will be signed into the Extended Day program at the drop-in rate of $30.

Limited scholarships are available. Please fill out this form for scholarship requests.

Enrichment classes are not part of the Extended Day program.

Next Generation Yoga (Grades Preschool-1)

Program Description: Yoga comes to life in these fun and creative classes designed to stimulate children’s growing curiosity! Playful Yoga poses, breathing exercises and relaxation techniques are infused with music, art, books, sensory exploration and learning points to create a unique learning experience. Next Generation Yoga classes spark children’s natural enthusiasm and joy, while supporting physical and social developmental skills. NGY classes are an equal balance between active and passive poses, song and dance, and time for sharing and reflection. Class themes include: “Yoga Games,” “Dino-mite Yoga!,” “Gratitude is Our Attitude,” “Outer Space Blast Off,” “Peace Begins with Me,” “Every Day is Earth Day,” “Yoga Sports,” “Yoga Makes Us Smarter” and “Imagine a Rainforest.

Program Description:In this exciting and kinesthetic class, students will explore the bicycle, learn basic mechanics, and how to do useful adjustments like fixing flat tires! Students must bring their own bicycle to school on class days or leave it stored in the SPARK Space. If a student would like to participate and cannot bring a bike from home please contact Ally to discuss potential options.

Wiffle Ball and Kickball with Coach Murphy (Grades 2-5)

Program Description: Student-athletes will have the opportunity to play wiffle ball and kickball. The main intent of this enrichment program is to give kids a chance to play sports they love. There will be lots of time to learn and practice skills and strategies, but the majority of the time will be spent in friendly competition of the desired spring sports.

Program Description: Little Chefs is an exciting, hands-on culinary experience for prekindergarten and kindergarten children. Each week students will cook a new recipe using fresh, seasonal ingredients while using a variety of age-appropriate kitchen tools. This class is meant to take the mystery out of cooking by providing an interactive learning experience that gives children the opportunity to develop a life-long love for trying new foods and the culinary arts.

Program Description: Clay-Makers will give students the opportunity to get their hands dirty while creating beautiful works of art. Students will learn a variety of hand building techniques; such as slap-building, coiling, and pinch pots. At the end students will be able to take home their glazed and fired finished pieces.

Social Skills Playgroup (Grades K-3)

Program Description: Coached play and cooperative games. Giddens Play Groups are intended to help increase children’s confidence and competence in social play. Each class will highlight an important friendship skill such as turn taking, trading, problem solving, and social thinking skills. Children will be coached in play and engaging activities to support the generalization of friendship skills while having fun and connecting with their peers. After more than 20 years of conducting social skills therapy groups, this instructor has decided that coached play is the key to helping children to obtain real practice negotiating real social situations.

AppInventor with Scratch (Grades 3-5)

Program Description: Students discover how to build games and solve real-world problems with App Inventor, a visual drag and drop programming language developed by Google. Through creating mobile apps like Finger Paint and Whack-A-Mole, students explore fundamental computer science concepts such as conditional statements, modeling with mathematical equations, and event handling. In the process of developing an original app, they learn about effective user interface and design principles.

Program Description: We do not underestimate the abilities of these little movers. Using our own custom designed soft equipment, we provide a safe environment for a sensory integrative experience developing motor planning, processing, and turning those thoughts to useful movement patterns that last a lifetime. These students will grow with the social and emotional benefits of structured and explorative play using basic parkour movements. Through a unique teaching method, borrowing from aspects of OT, PT, developmental psychology, and parkour, these little movers will certainly grow into the superheroes they aspire to be!

Program Description: Expand your imagination and let’s get creative! Hand sewing is a wonderful way to add detail or do finishing work that a machine can’t always do! We will be learning multiple types of hand sewing techniques, from the basic whip stitch to buttons, to embroidery! Students will start with a simple pre-requisite project and then move at their own pace to more exciting and challenging options!

Program Description: Parkour is the ability to move fluidly through your environment from one place to another. In this class, children will safely learn to progress through the basic parkour movements of: jumping, vaulting, climbing, swinging, balance, and rolling. This class builds strength, balance, and coordination all while safely growing your ability to engage and conquer your environment, overcoming obstacles both physically and mentally.
