Spring 2019 Enrichment
Enrichment classes are offered to provide children with a variety of fun and engaging learning opportunities that they may not have access to during their regular school day.
Each class is held once per week, for 6-12 week sessions. Enrichment classes are operated by outside vendors and Giddens teachers. Class sizes vary, as well as age/grade requirements.
Classes are held from 3:15-4:30. Students who are not picked up by 4:30 will be signed into the Extended Day program at the drop-in rate of $32.
Limited scholarships are available. Please fill out this form for scholarship requests.
Enrichment classes are not part of the Extended Day program.

Seattle Kids Yoga (Grades PS-K)

Program Description: Seattle Kids Yoga (SKY) classes are filled with creativity, kid-friendly Yoga poses, games, mindfulness, and most importantly, FUN! SKY Teachers design thoughtful and joyful classes based on children’s interests, with the intention of giving them tools to take “off the mat” and into the world. Some of the benefits received from SKY classes are increased motor skills, self- regulation, community building, body awareness, and concentration. Class themes include: Hello Spring!, Yoga Obstacle Course, Yoga Games, Animal Yoga, Circus Yoga, Outer Space Blast Off, Partner Yoga, and Kindness Matters. Simple crafts, music, books, sensory exploration, and time for sharing and reflection are infused into the classes to create a unique and enjoyable learning experience for all.

Kid's Kitchen (Grades 1-3)

Using child-safe instruments, students will learn culinary fundamentals like kitchen safety, knife skills, food handling, measurement, proper nutrition. All recipes are nut-free and vegetarian (Eggs and Dairy are used).

Program Description: Athletes will have the opportunity to play various types of football games. Strategies and skills will be taught and reviewed each session, but the majority of our time will be spent in healthy competition. We will be playing in Judkins Park!

Martial Arts (Grades 2-5)

Program Description: Martial Arts is a no-contact movement class that will investigate martial art and self defense techniques and philosophies from numerous cultures and a variety of traditional and contemporary sources. Classes emphasize natural alignment, expansive range of motion, stability, balance, and equipment manipulation to build strong, flexible, and agile bodies and minds. Martial Artists will not learn to fight, but will learn to know themselves and to protect themselves. Escape and flee will be important parts of class. Breaking boards, spinning bo staffs, punching bags, and kicking mats; various tactile and vestibular challenges will encourage students to examine their limits (both perceived and achieved limits), and to assess and understand risk. Students will develop spatial awareness, movement mapping, and complex kinetic problem solving while integrating reflexes and flooding brains with nutrients and oxygen! Taught by an experienced, professional instructor, Academy of Human Movement teaches students that motion can change emotion; that tenacity yields growth; and that self-awareness enables self-confidence.

Program Description: Students will practice their sporty skills with this athletics fundamentals class. Each week will have a theme (ex. animals, around the world, under the sea, outdoor exploration, and the Olympics). Children will develop sport fundamentals like running, jumping, throwing, kicking, and even some dancing. There will also be a focus on teamwork, problem solving, and supporting friends. Come join us for fun, friends, and physical fitness!

Junior Chefs Cooking Class (Grades 2-5)

Program Description: Each week students will learn how to prep and prepare a healthy and delicious dish. Each week the dishes will focus on a different culinary area such as appetizers, main dishes, beverages and desserts. Junior chefs will also learn food safety, Proper food handling, presentation and basic nutrition. At the end of the course each Chef will be awarded a junior chefs apron and a cookbook filled with all the recipes.

Little Parkour and the Art of Movement (Grades PS-1)

Program Description: We do not underestimate the abilities of these little movers. Using our own custom designed soft equipment, we provide a safe environment for a sensory integrative experience developing motor planning, processing, and turning those thoughts to useful movement patterns that last a lifetime. These students will grow with the social and emotional benefits of structured and explorative play using basic parkour movements. Through a unique teaching method, borrowing from aspects of OT, PT, developmental Psychology, and parkour, these little movers will certainly grow into the superheroes they aspire to be!

Paper Forms: Origami and More! (Grades K-5)

Program Description: Malaki returns with his origami and paper forms class! He offers a guided group project/paper model every class, for beginners up to expert folders. There is one on one assistance and guidance for those who want to embark on their own explorations. Paper folding has in recent years been understood as a strong pathway to mathematics and physics, NASA even uses origami inspired folding designs in some satellites and landers! Even if it’s just for fun, it’s good for the brain! Malaki brings lots of origami books, fresh beautiful paper, and thirty three years of folding experience with him.

Program Description: Are you inclined to invert, move, bounce, roll, flip, tumble, run, turn, and stretch? Then you’re in the right place! Join gymnast Matthew Lang to explore acrobatics and creative movement in a fun, safe environment. Students will use acrobatic movements to integrate reflexes, stabilize joints, strengthen muscles, and expand the experience of their own moving anatomy. Whether a true beginner, or a lifelong daredevil, students will develop and improve tumbling technique!

Program Description: Parkour and the Art of Movement is the ability to move fluidly through your environment from one place to another. In this class, children will safely learn to progress through the basic parkour movements of jumping, vaulting, climbing, swinging, balancing, and rolling. The movements build strength, balance, and coordination. Your child will acquire the ability to engage with their environment while overcoming obstacles, both physically and mentally. Our program is based on the 5 pillars of Social Emotional Learning (SEL), which are self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making. Practicing parkour skills fosters creativity and boosts confidence. Accomplishing challenges that seemed impossible at one point will give your child the confidence to achieve whatever they set their mind to.
