Fall 2018 Enrichment Program
Enrichment classes are offered to provide children with a variety of fun and engaging learning opportunities that they may not have access to during their regular school day.
Each class is held once per week, for 6-12 week sessions. Enrichment classes are operated by outside vendors and Giddens teachers. Class sizes vary, as well as age/grade requirements.
Classes are held from 3:15-4:30. Students who are not picked up by 4:30 will be signed into the Extended Day program at the drop-in rate of $32.
Limited scholarships are available. Please fill out this form for scholarship requests.
Enrichment classes are not part of the Extended Day program.

Next Generation Yoga (Grades Preschool-1)

Program Description: Next Generation Yoga classes are filled with creativity, developmentally-appropriate Yoga poses, movement and mindfulness, and most importantly, fun! Nicole and her team of experienced Kids Yoga teachers design thoughtful and joyful classes based on children’s interests, with the intention of giving them tools to take “off the mat” and into the world. Some of the benefits received from NGY classes are increased fine and gross motor skills, self-regulation and sensory processing, community building, body awareness, focus and concentration, relaxation, breathing techniques to use at anytime, and learning through movement. Class themes include: Yoga Obstacle Course, Halloween Celebration, Gratitude is Our Attitude, Outer Space Blast Off, Peace Begins with Me, Every Day Mindfulness, Yoga Makes Us Smarter and I am a Superhero. Art, music, books, sensory exploration, and time for sharing and reflection are infused into the classes to create a unique and enjoyable learning experience.

Trendy Crafts “Decorate Your Space” (Grades K-5)

Program Description: Join Trendy Crafts each week and create a unique craft to decorate your space. Customize your project to fit your taste and personality with all of the latest supplies and techniques. Craft projects this Fall include Dot Art Desk Accessories, Mixed Media Canvases, Starry Night Lanterns and so much more!

Program Description: Student-athletes will have the opportunity to participate in Cross Country. The main intent of this enrichment program is to give kids a chance to play sports they love. There will be lots of time to learn and practice skills and strategies, but the majority of the time will be spent in friendly competition of the sports.

Clay Makers Fall Session (Grades PreK-1)

Program Description: Clay-Makers will give students the opportunity to get their hands dirty while creating beautiful works of art. Students will learn a variety of hand building techniques; such as slap-building, coiling, and pinch pots. At the end students will be able to take home their glazed and fired finished pieces.

Machine Sewing (Grades 1-5)

Program Description: Students are invited to learn a skill they will use for a lifetime and a hobby they will forever enjoy…sewing! No experience necessary for students to learn the basics and beyond. Beginning students will learn machine safety and beginning sewing techniques, while the more experienced students can expand on skills they already have. Students will advance at their own pace to more exciting and challenging projects throughout the season. Projects, which are constantly rotating during the term, include backpacks, phone cases, clothing, accessories, bags, games, stuffed animals and more! *For all new sewers, the first class of the session is mandatory, please contact Chelsea Cook if your child is unable to attend*

Musical Theater Fall Session (Grades 2-5)

Program Description: Musical theatre nerds and anyone who wants to learn about musical theater are welcome! This class will feature singing, dancing, and acting as we create a Musical Theatre Extravaganza! Be ready to sing, move, and have a great time. No performance experience is necessary. We will focus on teamwork, risk-taking, and making some good old fashioned noise! This class will culminate in a final performance with several different song and dances from our musical theatre repertoire.

Martial Arts (Grades PK-1)

Program Description: Martial Arts is a no-contact movement class that will investigate martial art and self defense techniques and philosophies from numerous cultures and a variety of traditional and contemporary sources. Classes emphasize natural alignment, expansive range of motion, stability, balance, and equipment manipulation to build strong, flexible, and agile bodies and minds. Martial Artists will not learn to fight, but will learn to know themselves and to protect themselves. Escape and flee will be important parts of class. Breaking boards, spinning bo staffs, punching bags, and kicking mats; various tactile and vestibular challenges will encourage students to examine their limits (both perceived and achieved limits), and to assess and understand risk. Students will develop spatial awareness, movement mapping, and complex kinetic problem solving while integrating reflexes and flooding brains with nutrients and oxygen! Taught by an experienced, professional instructor, Academy of Human Movement teaches students that motion can change emotion; that tenacity yields growth; and that self-awareness enables self-confidence.*min students: 6/max students: 15

Creative Computing with Scratch 101 (Grades 2-5)

Program Description: In Creative Computing with Scratch 101, students design their own world and then bring it to life with Scratch, a visual drag and drop programming language developed at MIT. Through creating animations and developing interactive games, students learn the fundamentals of programming, including initialization, looping, and conditional statements. Students of all learning styles are captivated by the use of games, movement, and collaboration in the classroom. Instructors provide personalized help so that students can progress at their own pace as they experiment with fun new challenges. Prerequisites: Open to students in grades 2-5 (1st grade upon approval). No programming experience required!

Program Description: We do not underestimate the abilities of these little movers. Using our own custom designed soft equipment, we provide a safe environment for a sensory integrative experience developing motor planning, processing, and turning those thoughts to useful movement patterns that last a lifetime. These students will grow with the social and emotional benefits of structured and explorative play using basic parkour movements. Through a unique teaching method, borrowing from aspects of OT, PT, developmental Psychology, and parkour, these little movers will certainly grow into the superheroes they aspire to be!

Young Rembrandts Drawing and Cartooning (Grades K-3)

Program Description: Enroll your elementary student in a Young Rembrandts drawing class. Our bountiful selection of drawings introduces our students to a fascinating world of color, pattern, and design. Keeping with the season, our students will create fall-themed illustrations like taffy apples and a farmer’s scarecrow. Stylized art styles will be explored through our tarantula line art and Van Gogh-inspired drawing featuring vibrant sunflowers. All this and more await your child in a Young Rembrandts classroom! Acting for the Camera Spring Session (Grades 2-5)

Program Description: An on-camera class where the Y.E.S. students learn the fundamentals of screen acting through a series of acting exercises using improvisation and physical tasks. The students will become familiar with screen acting terminology, and experience the difference between screen and stage techniques. Each class begins with a vocal and physical warm-up, and the course ends with a digital download of students’ work.

Program Description: This dynamic class will focus on mobility, coordination, agility, natural alignment, and reflex integration. Utilizing beginner tumbling and acrobatics and a diverse assortment of cultural, creative, and classical dance vocabularies, students will develop spatial awareness, self awareness, and will move to explore and solve kinetic puzzles and problems. One of the primary functions of the primate brain is coordinate complex movements; your Mighty Movers will be flooding their brains with nutrients and oxygen, laying the groundwork for a lifetime of intelligent bodies and fit brains!

Program Description: Parkour is the ability to move fluidly through your environment from one place to another. In this class, children will safely learn to progress through the basic parkour movements of: jumping, vaulting, climbing, swinging, balance, and rolling. This class builds strength, balance, and coordination all while safely growing your ability to engage and conquer your environment, overcoming obstacles both physically and mentally.
