Weekly Themes for RKC Summer Program

June 23rd-27th Animal Adventures Did you know no two zebras have stripes that are exactly alike? Or that hummingbirds are the only birds that can fly backwards? Bring your cool and wacky animal facts and learn some new ones. Tell us about your favorite animals, from the furriest critters to the largest in the land and explore with us some of these amazing creatures from the natural world.

June 30th-July 3rd (no program on the 4th) Cooking Up Some Nutritious Fun! There’s much more to cooking than just the end result—though that is part of the excitement! Have some fun in the kitchen and see what delicious concoctions you can come up with; plus learn about the cultures and peoples that have produced some of our favorite dishes. Learn to develop healthy eating habits and find out why some of your favorite treats are not just tasty, but good for your body. We’ll present students with an overview of what it means to be healthy and how to make nutritious decisions that will last a lifetime.

July 7th-July 11th Say It Loud Storytelling No matter how loud you say it, everyone has a story to tell, and these stories can be told in many ways. This week kids will express themselves though songs, tales, jokes and other ways that have been passed down through centuries and cultures. Join us and share your favorite yarns or listen to some new ones that you’re sure to love.

July 14th-July 18th Summer Science Discover new and exciting aspects of our world this week by participating in some shocking science experiments. Science can be found everywhere you look: up in the sky, under a microscope, in our neighborhood, and even under your nose (indeed, up your nose as well!). This week we will be investigating the world of science, and in turn will be finding out fascinating things about the world itself.

July 21-25 and July 28-Aug.1 Master-Peace Theatre All the world’s a stage, but students are more than merely players when attending our two weeks of theatre (note: the fancy spelling). Kids will act in skits and write sketches of their own, all while preparing for a grand performance at the end of our two weeks. Get ready for some thrills and laughs from our talented, budding thespians.

August 4th-August 8th Movin’ to the Music Come and hear the sound of young America as we explore all of our favorite musical styles, from the classics to classic rock and hip hop. But don’t just use your ears; be sure to show off your best dance moves and rock star poses, and bring your own musical talents to share. Everybody will be movin’ and everybody will be groovin’!

August 11th-August 15th (half-day and potluck on the 15th) Giddens Olympics While the world gathers to watch the top athletes of each nation competing, at Giddens we’ll be holding some fun contests of our own. In addition to exploring new sports and exercises, kids will learn a bit about the history of the Olympic Games, the Special Olympics, and other ways that the peoples of the world gather for friendly fun and teamwork.

Speciality Camps for 7-12 Year Olds

July 7-July 11 Hip Hop Specialty Camp Don’t just stand there; bust a move with some of the coolest young dancers in town. Bianca, who taught dance at Giddens last summer, will be teaching new moves and routines to our hippest summer campers.

July 14-18 Gardening Camp We will go on a couple of field trips to nearby gardens, engage in nature writing and poetry, create garden art, and of course, spend lots of time out in the Secret Garden.  We will learn about plants and animals, plant and harvest crops, learn about the importance of water and irrigation, and work to maintain and beautify the Secret Garden.

July 21- 25th Make Stuff! Camp Crafts are hip!  In this camp, we'll use our creativity to explore knitting, felting, sewing, hand spinning, and creating from recycled materials -- exciting tools for making fun stuff like toys, clothes, puppets, and art.

July 28-Aug. 1 Clay Creations Specialty Camp The class will take place at Pratt Fine Arts studio from 9am-12pm, then will resume at Giddens School until 3pm.

Aug 11-15th Summer Olympics Speciality Camp Experience the fun and excitement of the Olympics—Giddens-style! Join Coach Kevin and a few cool kids in some friendly competition in the spirit of this summer’s Olympic games.
