Social Justice Questions for Parents
Parents
and teachers, as well as family friends and relatives, must consider their own
roles in supporting their children as they learn about justice and injustice.
The questions and suggestions that follow are intended to help parents be aware
of the ways in which social justice is perceived, explained and taught to
children.
How
do we talk to our kids about social justice? How can we make them stronger,
more optimistic rather than cynical, more engaged rather than withdrawn?
How
do we find everyday opportunities to talk about social justice with children if
the children don’t deliver the opportunities to us?
Do
you understand the approach your child’s teacher takes when discussing social
justice? What are some examples of justice-related curriculum and instruction?
What
are some words to use with children too young to understand “social justice?”
Are
there “hands-on” experiences I can find that may provoke conversations about
justice?
Pick
a justice-related topic that you have not yet discussed with your child but
feel that you would like to (or ought to).
How will you do it? When? Why?
