News & Homework for April 10

 Dear Families,

One of the most wonderful things about working with your children – and about working at Giddens School in general – is observing the way that the students treat each other. Every day, we witness interactions in which students support each other’s learning, take care of their friends, and help younger students. Our students also take a great deal of responsibility for building and maintaining a strong community.

News & Homework for April 2

 Dear Families,

We’re hoping to see all of you this Wednesday, April 4th, at 6:00 PM for the Our Whole Lives meeting. OWL is our gender, sexuality, and human development curriculum. We have RSVPs from a few of you, but we’re hoping to hear from everyone. Please let us know whether or not you can make it. This is an important opportunity to learn how the curriculum is structured, but also to learn how you can be involved. The OWL philosophy is that parents are their children’s most important educators, and the evening will provide some tips on how to fill that role.

News & Homework for March 27

 Dear Families,

Thank you so much for the beautiful flowers that you brought last week for Staff Appreciation Day! They brightened our classrooms. We have many important upcoming events that need to be on your calendar. First, please take a moment to sign-up up for a conference on Friday April 6th, or Friday, April 13th. Students are welcome to join, but please notify your teacher first to allow us to prepare. Please sign up early; sheets are outside of the classroom.

The fourth and fifth grade will be performing a drumming and singing concert this Wednesday, March 28th. The show begins at 6:00 PM in the big room. The students have been preparing for months and it is sure to be an exciting show!

Book Clubs and Literary Essays:
Reading and writing are always closely linked, but they’re linked even more closely than usual in our current units. Students are reading and discussing books together in clubs of three to five students. The broad goals of book clubs are to increase students’ understanding of, enjoyment of, and motivation in reading. These goals are accomplished through structured discussions and activities.

News & Homework for March 13

We hope that getting up an hour earlier for Daylight Savings Time wasn’t too painful! We have some exciting upcoming events and curriculum planned, so read carefully.

Writing Celebration: Our celebration of the students’ fiction writing will be this Thursday, from 2:30 PM until the end of the school day. Please come and enjoy the excellent writing the students have been doing. All are invited.

News & Homework for March 5

Field Trip Tomorrow: Tomorrow, we are going to the Mercer Slough. The bus will pick us up at 9:15 AM and drop us off back at school at 3:00 in the afternoon. Please help your child make sure he or she has good walking shoes or boots, warm clothing, raingear, water, and a lunch. The goal of the trip is to learn about the wetland ecosystem through field science activities. Remember, our trip to the Museum of Flight is coming up on March 29th. And on June 6th through June 8th, we’ll be at the Ramblewood Environmental Learning Center in Sequim Bay State Park. Please let us know if you are interested in coming on that trip.

 Dear Families,

Auction Project:
It’s that time of year again! We need your help to complete an auction project for each classroom by March 8th. We need volunteers for the following roles: project coordinator for each classroom, volunteers to help the students during the school day, and volunteers to work on the project in the evening or over the weekend. Also, let us know if you have an idea about a project that will allow for student involvement and a beautiful product without being a ton of work. We look forward to hearing from you this week.

Science:
We are studying flight in science class. In this unit, the students will make hypotheses about what sort of gliders will stay aloft the best, then design and build gliders to test their hypotheses.

News & Homework for November 21

 Dear Students and Families,

We truly enjoyed meeting with you during our first parent-teacher conference of the year. The opportunity to share information, ideas, and stories is always welcomed.

In fifth grade math we have begun our study of geometry. This unit is designed to help students develop a conceptual understanding of area, perimeter, volume, and shape attributes. Students will engage in guided exploration of different shapes aimed to build knowledge of these ideas as well as practical applications of the concepts.

Navigation and Exploration Project

This week we are launching a new project! The project is designed to compliment the work your student is doing in both science and social studies. For this project, your child will choose a voyage of exploration and discovery to investigate. Please click on the link below to see the project details, timeline, and evaluation rubric.

 Dear Students and Families,

It is already the middle of November, and we have many exciting projects and events to tell you about! Please remember that this week we will have parent-teacher conferences on Thursday and Friday and there will be no school. Normally, these conferences are designed for the teacher and parent only. However, if you feel your child would benefit from attending, please let your teacher know in advance. There is no school and no extended day the following Thursday or Friday (November 24-25) for Thanksgiving Break.

News & Homework for November 7

 Dear Families,
Please remember that there is no school this Friday and to sign-up for a parent-teacher conference.

Reading:
We have started our next phase of reading curriculum, reading partners. Reading partners provide a great opportunity to teach students how to engage in active conversations about books. This time also helps to expand the literary reach of many students by asking them to read a book they may not have selected on their own. Pairs are asked to pick a book, read it within the same timeframe, and participate in conversations and projects aimed to increase comprehension. Over time, reading partners will serve as a foundation for book clubs.
